Since I haven’t bored you with my fruitless Jeep search lately, there’s one update worth mentioning . This popped up over the weekend about a half hour away, so off I go to take a look. Manual, 4.0L, 4WD.
A fair few miles, but not a terrible price for a dealership, a nd some rust, but not terrible for 220k miles around here.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
I’ve never driven a “Volkswagen Cherokee” so I’m looking forward to it.

If they are selling it for $3,800 they paid $1,500 or less.

Not a terrible price honestly and I like the green. Dealership might be a bit scummy based on the terrible ad but I hope you can pull something through this time.
![]() 10/19/2020 at 22:05 |

That’s even a reasonable price for it. Hope it turns out like you're after!

A different Andy Mohr dealership I researched a couple of years ago has a poor reputation, but so far the used car manager here hasn’t set off any alarms. That might change when we meet tomorrow.

That looks significantly less hole y than the one I looked at for you. That shift knob is very shiny.
A bit odd that the second to last photo is a stock photo of a red XJ.
![]() 10/19/2020 at 22:13 |

The red XJ and automatic shifter photos were put there as placeholders when the posting went up; someone forgot to remove them later .
I saw the shifter and cursed because I assumed that meant my email alert was fooled, but grabbed the VIN and downloaded the build spec and got excited again.

Don't let us down, JJ.

You’ll need a proper Volkswagen shift knob if you buy it.

When it comes to spending a big stack o’ cash I’m almost guaranteed to disappoint. Easier to spend money when it’s a piece of legal paper instead of that magic green.
Still, there’s hope.

Best of luck to you. Condition seems a bit rough so hopefully they are open to negotiations and there aren't lots of hidden fees.

I like it, green is good.
![]() 10/19/2020 at 22:48 |

That would be a great inside joke if he actually bought it. If it were me, I’d do it and smile with every shift.
![]() 10/19/2020 at 22:49 |

I kinda like it. I hope you can make it work.

As always, it’s the hard question to answer: at 220k miles, what’s going to break next, and do I care?

You know something will sooner or later. Best you can do is play the best odds you can find that it won’t be something crippling.

The elusive VW Cherokee, nice!
Luxury 2-spoke soft feel black steering wheel
Fancy

I’m thinking KiltedPadre has the right idea.
And that steering wheel is...not precisely luxury.

Jeez the prices on these are so crazy. I could have made a lot of money if I just sat on mine instead of building them up and driving them through trees and over rocks.
![]() 10/20/2020 at 10:00 |

What fun would that have been?

Pretty r ough, half the exhaust missing, leaks everywhere. I may lowball them but not optimistic. I think it’s time to put that money into my current Jeep instead.
![]() 10/20/2020 at 16:39 |
|
Just the exhaust? That isn't that bad, especially if you have someone that will do the labor after you buy the parts yourself. As for it being rough, is that inside or out? The photos seemed to show a decent vehicle for being 21 years old.
![]() 10/20/2020 at 18:05 |

Mainly the leaks. Between replacement tires, wheel, leaks, exhaust I figure 1500.
I’m stressed today because my electrical system started flaking out today. Probably an easy fix, maybe, but I’m just too tired of the problems at the moment to be eager about the XJ.

Get some rest
![]() 10/20/2020 at 23:19 |
|
More demoralized than tired, although there’s some of that too.
I’m going to throw them a low offer tomorrow, worst (best?) they can do is blow me off.
![]() 10/21/2020 at 11:49 |

Any news to share? I meant to ask about the leaks. Were you talking mechanical leaks like normal Jeeps, or physical leaks like bad window seals and hole in floorboards?
![]() 10/21/2020 at 11:56 |
|
Well, I can’t rule out bad window seals, but no these are lubricant leaks. They’re really bad, which makes me wonder about the previous owner.
That’s something else that bothers me: I’ve gotten spoiled by the liberty to talk to the owner and get a feel for the Jeep.
Anyway, I’m waiting to hear about a possible money sink (unrelated to this) before I make an offer. I’m also ruminating on just throwing in the towel and trading in for a new Wrangler or Gladiator.
![]() 10/21/2020 at 12:22 |

Oh boy, this isn’t good. I hate to break it to ya, but you’re starting to repeat things we’ve all suggested to you in the past. So instead of rehashing it, I will just add this tidbit: a straight 6, manual XJ’s resale value is twice as much (at least) of a Liberty
![]() 10/21/2020 at 12:34 |

I know I sound like a broken record. Too many conflicting goals and not enough money to make them all happen.

You never heard of the Iltis?

In fact, I don’t believe I had. Neat!
